SAND, a promising new multiplayer game, is already turning heads before the official start of Steam Next Fest on October 14. While the festival will soon launch thousands of game demos, some indie developers have taken the opportunity to release their demos early, giving gamers a sneak peek and building momentum. Among these is SAND, developed by Hologryph and TowerHaus, a game that’s already climbing Steam’s most-played demo charts.
At first glance, SAND seems like a typical open-world shooter. Set on a planet called Sophie, within the remnants of an Austro-Hungarian empire, players explore a harsh, sandy wasteland in search of equipment, occasionally ambushing other players or being ambushed themselves. However, the twist that sets SAND apart is the ability to construct a base—no ordinary base, but a massive, steel behemoth that walks on four legs.
The trailer, which gives a glimpse of the Steam demo, shows just how engaging this game can be. It’s reminiscent of Halo 3’s campaign moments, where players are tasked with infiltrating a moving fortress, battling enemies on its roof, and sabotaging it from within. The anticipation for SAND’s final release is growing, especially as gamers imagine chaotic clashes between multiple Tramplers (the game’s walking bases), akin to a pirate ship battle, with players leaping from one makeshift balcony to another.
Currently, the demo focuses on PvP aspects, but the developers have promised much more in the full release. Players can expect NPCs, interactive points of interest, new compartments for Tramplers, expanded PvE content, and additional weapons.
However, the game isn’t without its criticisms. Steam reviews are mixed, with many praising the game’s ambitious concept while others point out performance issues. These technical problems are frustrating for players who struggle to enjoy a match without experiencing lag or crashes. Still, despite these growing pains, SAND’s innovative mechanics and unique setting make it a game to keep on your radar.
