Rockstar has finally updated the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions of its Grand Theft Auto Trilogy to include the improvements previously available only on its mobile version. Originally launched for PC and consoles three years ago, the remastered trilogy received widespread criticism for numerous graphical glitches and other issues. The release sparked a sarcastic response from the initial development studio and prompted Rockstar to issue a formal apology.
Now, these enhancements—already well-received on the trilogy’s Netflix-released smartphone version—are available on other platforms. Notably, the update adds a “Classic Lighting” mode, which brings back the vibrant colors and lighting of the original games. This mode is accessible in each game’s pause menu and is now enabled by default. Other visual improvements include upgraded character models, improved heat haze, and enhanced ambient clouds.
The trilogy’s initial launch was plagued by bugs, prompting numerous refund requests. Rockstar temporarily pulled the game from sale to address these issues, including removing unlicensed music, developer comments, and remnants of the controversial “Hot Coffee” mini-game.
At launch, Digital Foundry sharply criticized the trilogy’s condition, calling the issues “blatant and jarring.” Rockstar responded by offering free games to PC players and rolling out patches, though complaints persisted. Even the game’s Steam release in early 2023 faced backlash for unresolved problems. With these latest updates, Rockstar aims to finally deliver a stable, polished version of the GTA Trilogy.
