Microsoft has opened preorders for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the next installment of the popular franchise, which is set to launch on November 19th for Xbox and PC. The new version brings several exciting updates, including new aircraft like hot air balloons and a more realistic depiction of the simulated earth. However, one of the most significant improvements may be a much smaller installation size.

The current version of Microsoft Flight Simulator requires over 130GB of storage for just the base game. Players who download additional aircraft or install world updates to enhance scenery and airports end up using even more storage. This is particularly challenging for those playing on the Xbox Series S, which offers only 364GB of storage—leaving little room for anything else when the game is installed.

For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the installation size has been reduced to about 30GB, thanks to advancements in cloud streaming technology. Instead of downloading massive world updates, players will stream higher-detailed areas relevant to their flight path. This allows for a visually rich experience without requiring vast amounts of local storage, even as the game continues to showcase high-resolution graphics for landmarks, cities, and airports.

In addition to the technological improvements, Flight Simulator 2024 introduces a new career system that simulates an aviation career. Players will begin with flying lessons, including preflight procedures like route planning based on weather conditions. As they progress, they can take on roles such as search and rescue missions, aerial firefighting, and commercial flights. Eventually, players can earn enough virtual money to start and manage their own aviation companies, complete with fleet maintenance.

The game also features new aircraft, including the Boeing 747-400 LCF Dreamlifter, a unique version of the plane Boeing uses for manufacturing the 787. For those seeking a more relaxed flying experience, hot air balloons have been added, complete with realistic soft-body simulation. Turning on the burners will cause the balloons to inflate and gain altitude, mimicking real-world behavior.

Ground detailing has also been improved, influencing where and how certain aircraft can land, enhancing the overall realism of the game. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be offered in several editions, with prices ranging from $69.99 to $199.99, depending on the number of planes and airports included. The Standard Edition will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on launch day.

For longtime fans of the series, the reduced installation size offers the potential to free up storage space while continuing to enjoy the immersive experience of virtual piloting, now with more career options and aircraft to explore.
