11 bit studios, the developer behind Frostpunk 2 and This War of Mine, has announced a delay for its upcoming game The Alters. Originally slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2024, the game is now expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
In a statement to the Polish financial outlet bankier.pl, 11 bit studios president Przemysław Marszał explained that the delay was necessary to ensure the game meets their high-quality standards. “The production schedule for The Alters was very tight,” Marszał said. “We were uncertain if the developers would have enough time to complete the work to the quality we all expect. After so many years of production, we don’t want to risk releasing a game with shortcomings.”
The Alters is a survival game set for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, with a day-one launch on Microsoft’s Game Pass. Players take on the role of Jan, a space miner who must create alternate versions of himself to survive on a hostile planet.
According to the official description:
“Drawing inspiration from This War of Mine, The Alters throws players into an intense survival scenario that Jan cannot handle alone. After crash landing on a harsh planet, Jan must avoid deadly conditions by seeking refuge in a high-tech mobile base. The problem? The base is designed to be run by a skilled team, and Jan is on his own. However, with the discovery of Rapidium, a mysterious substance native to the planet, Jan gains the ability to create alternate versions of himself, called Alters, by altering key decisions from his past—potentially changing everything.”
The delay follows the recent release of Frostpunk 2, which managed to break even but was not enough to prevent a significant drop in the company’s share price.
