Work on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake continues, though there has been little recent news directly about the game. Since the brief teaser in 2021, there have been no significant updates, suggesting that the remake of the iconic role-playing game (RPG) may still be a long way from release.
In the original KOTOR, players took on the role of a mysterious Force user caught in a war between the Galactic Republic and the dark forces led by Darth Malgus. If you’re unfamiliar with the setting, don’t worry—KOTOR is set thousands of years before the events of the Star Wars films. This distant timeline gave the original game plenty of creative freedom to tell its own unique story, featuring memorable characters, impactful moral decisions, and epic setpieces.
The remake is being developed by Saber Interactive, a US-based studio that was, until recently, part of the Swedish media conglomerate Embracer Group. While the original KOTOR was created by BioWare, renowned for producing top-tier RPGs, fans are eager to see whether Saber Interactive can uphold that legacy.
The remake, first announced at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, is expected to launch as a timed console exclusive on PS5, with potential releases for Xbox Series X|S and PC to follow. However, no release window has been confirmed.
Development on the remake was initially handled by Aspyr Media, but Saber Interactive took over after KOTOR was reported to still be in the early stages of development. Following Saber’s recent separation from Embracer Group, it has confirmed that work on the KOTOR remake is ongoing, though no additional details have been provided.
Curiously, the teaser trailer for the KOTOR remake, which features the voice of Bastilla Shan and a glimpse of the story’s pivotal villain Darth Revan, was de-listed from PlayStation’s official YouTube channel. It remains unclear whether this is due to development issues or simply a media management decision by Sony.
In the meantime, Star Wars fans can check out Star Wars Outlaws for their next intergalactic adventure while waiting for further news on the KOTOR remake.
