Black Myth: Wukong has been a remarkable success for Game Science, selling an impressive 18 million copies in just two weeks. The developer is already planning to build on this success, as Hero Games’ Daniel Wu told Bloomberg that an expansion is currently in the works.
Hero Games, Game Science’s largest external shareholder, has supported the company through early challenges. Wu’s company contributed a significant portion of the $70 million budget for the game. “Wukong proves that not only do we have top-tier game development capabilities, but we can also tell a compelling story with strong Chinese cultural elements,” Wu said in an interview.
Further details about the expansion are still under wraps, and a reveal may take some time. There were hints, as shared by IGN, about Game Science potentially expanding the Black Myth universe with more titles following the release of its first trailer in 2020. Whether these plans will manifest as sequels or be included in the upcoming expansion remains to be seen.
In the meantime, Game Science has teased the possibility of introducing “non-pay-to-win in-game purchases,” though nothing has been officially confirmed. The developer is also working on optimizing the Xbox Series X/S version, which has faced delays. Stay tuned for more updates.
