Activision has ramped up excitement for the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, sparking speculation that major announcements could be on the horizon. Originally released on September 29, 1999, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater quickly became a classic, selling millions of copies and launching a hugely successful franchise.

The sequels only amplified the series’ success, with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 often hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time. Pro Skater 3 and 4 are similarly revered, as are the Underground titles. However, after the Underground games, the series began to lose some momentum. American Wasteland was well-received but didn’t quite match the heights of its predecessors, and subsequent titles like Project 8 and Proving Ground marked further declines. The franchise hit a low point with the poorly-received Pro Skater 5, leading to a hiatus. Activision briefly revived the series in 2020 with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, a well-received remake of the first two games, but the franchise has been quiet since.

Recently, Activision updated the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater social media channels with new artwork, including a logo celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary, as spotted by Push Square. While this isn’t a definitive sign of a new game, it certainly suggests that fans should keep a close eye on September 29. After all, it seems unlikely that Activision would celebrate the anniversary without something to promote.

Even if a new game isn’t announced, many fans would jump at the chance to revisit the classic titles. While updated versions of the first two Pro Skater games are available, others, like Tony Hawk’s Underground, remain locked on older consoles. The challenge of bringing these games to modern platforms, particularly due to their licensed soundtracks, remains a significant hurdle.

There were reports that a Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake was once in the works but was ultimately rejected by Activision in favor of focusing on Call of Duty. However, with Xbox now owning Activision, the possibility of revisiting the franchise under new leadership might be on the table. Whether or not September 29 brings a new game, the anniversary could hold exciting developments for Tony Hawk fans.
